I still hope they find some way to recover. By the time the wolves left the gates, they'd already burned down the their own grain silos to make the village not worth pillaging. In Ubi's case they never got taken over, but they realigned the business so much to bolster all the other investment pools that they fell into a trap that their entire production strategy was based on appeasing investment desires at that particular moment in time and fortifying capital to hedge against a clean takeover by the hostile party. (Kotick may be a monster, but he did float a sunken ship.) In Activision's case they bought them, siphoned every penny of capital they had to plug their other debts, then spun off their empty husk so that all they had left was milking CoD and Guitar Hero and Skylanders to plug the leaks. In hindsight, I think it was the Vivendi hostile takeover attempt that ruined them. They grew exponentially into dozens of oversize studios in dozens of countries and became their own content farm, then they swung wildly at every single new business model that passed them by, getting predictably burned by each. They were great for a while, but at some point maybe 2015 or so they just lost sight of what they were doing. ![]() They still make some great games at times, but not like they once could. It’s worth remembering that, while it’s unusual for announced games to get cancelled, projects get shuffled around internally all the time – and we don’t even know how far along these two additional titles were. The two other games the publisher has cancelled were unannounced, so we’ll probably never know what they entailed – unless the details leak, of course. It looks like the latter is safe for now, while a PS5 remake of the original Splinter Cell is still in development as well. The same is true of Splinter Cell VR, which was announced for Meta Quest alongside an Assassin’s Creed spin-off a couple of years ago. The Battle Royale, which was only announced less than a year ago, was pretty poorly received when it was originally revealed – but has had a handful of betas in 2022. Following on from Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora’s delay, the French publisher has confirmed that it’s cancelled four games – including the free-to-play Ghost Recon Frontline, which was due out on PS5 and PS4. What is going on at Ubisoft right now? We’re getting bad vibes from the publisher at the minute, so we hope all is okay on the inside. ![]()
